Meals with Love for Seniors: Robert’s Story
Categories:
A story series by Mary Jessup

Raised in Michigan, Robert has been coming to the Downtown Senior Center on O’Farrell Street for nutritious lunch almost every day for 20 years. You can easily spy him, as he always wears one of the many hats he’s collected over the years.

Because he lives alone, Robert greatly enjoys visiting with friends during lunch at the Senior Center. He especially likes all the different soups served by Project Open Hand as part of the lunch menus.

“All the food is pretty good, too,” he says in his gentle way.

Robert recently celebrated his 82nd birthday. All his friends at the Senior Center signed a birthday card for him.

“I love life,” Robert says, laughing softly. “I’m always happy. From an early age, I’ve been an artist. Since 2nd and 3rd grade, I’ve loved to draw and paint. I make landscapes, snowscapes, and seascapes, and work on three art projects at a time.”

In his youth he rode a motorcycle; now he prefers walking in the City.

“And I plan to attend the Senior Center monthly birthday party,” Robert says smiling. “I wouldn’t miss it!”
