'Meals with Love' for Seniors: Bruce's Story
Categories:
A story series by Mary Jessup

A retired radio news reporter, Bruce lives alone in San Francisco and counts on visiting the Downtown Senior Center every day for companionship and healthy lunches from Project Open Hand.

“I like the roasted chicken, and the soups are consistently good, especially the lentil,” Bruce says, smiling. “Project Open Hand pays great attention to serving a variety of balanced, nutritious meals. They do a terrific job.”

Multi-talented Bruce loves life, and he loves to sing. He moved to California from the east coast in 1970, and earned a B.A. in music at the former Music and Arts Institute, San Francisco. He was a radio news reporter for KQED, KCBS, and KYA, and a columnist with Marina Times and San Francisco Examiner. As a volunteer, Bruce served as a Reader for Broadcast Services for the Blind, now part of Lighthouse for the Blind.

Bruce was also a chef for seven years at the Fairmont Hotel Squire Room, so he knows about the complexity of food preparation. “When I first came to the Downtown Senior Center a year ago,” says Bruce, “I was surprised at how good the food is. And the strategy involved in delivering food to so many people is amazing.”

The Downtown Senior Center is located in the Tenderloin neighborhood, on O’Farrell Street near the corner of Jones. It is one of a dozen senior centers, where Project Open Hand serves hot lunches daily to seniors. Bruce says, “I’ve met some interesting people, and made some good friends at the Downtown Senior Center. It’s an oasis for seniors in a chaotic area.”

Do you know a senior who could use a warm, nutritious meal and good company? We’d love to see him or her at one of our senior lunch sites. Learn more and find a senior dining room at www.openhand.org/seniors.
