Senior breakfasts get more egg-cellent!
Categories:

The best days begin with a fresh, healthy breakfast. This is especially true for our senior neighbors.

So last month, we introduced new, healthier breakfasts for seniors at the Curry Senior Center. For years, we have provided breakfast at Curry – as well as nutritious lunch – but in the eyes of Senior Program Director Noah Lopez, who joined Project Open Hand about a year ago, our breakfast just wasn’t up to snuff.

“I’m looking at every aspect of our Senior Nutrition Program with fresh eyes,” Noah said. “I’m continually looking for opportunities for us to do better, and providing healthier breakfast with more variety is one of those improvements. I was able to work with our kitchen and purchasing teams to build a new, healthier menu that better reflects the nutrition and wellness that is at the core of Project Open Hand’s work.”
Seniors who visit the Curry Senior Center can now enjoy oatmeal and raisins, granola and yogurt, scrambled eggs, and hot cereal. This is a wonderful step up from the daily coffee, toast and peanut butter offered previously.

“Serving seniors a healthy breakfast is just as important as providing them a hearty lunch – especially for the neighbors in need who join us for meals at Curry Senior Center,” Noah said. “Remember those Saturday breakfasts that mom would make? I want to revive those memories and create positive experiences for our seniors.

“So far, the new menu has been a big hit,” he added. “In the first month, we’ve already seen a big increase in the number of breakfasts we’re serving, up from about 100 people a day to a peak of 189 guests one day in May. We are thankful to our partners at Curry Senior Center who helped make this improvement happen.”
