Project Open Hand has been providing Meals with Love to people living with HIV/AIDS in San Francisco since 1985. The first grassroots nutrition program in response to the AIDS crisis, Project Open Hand's program of nutrition services has been replicated by hundreds of organizations around the country and the world.

Following our Founder Ruth Brinker's philosophy, we believe that good nutrition is a powerful weapon in the fight against debilitating illness. Project Open Hand provides meals, groceries and nutrition counseling to persons living with HIV/AIDS, home delivered meals to the Homebound and Critically Ill, and congregate lunches to Seniors.

In 1997, Project Open Hand moved to our present home at 730 Polk Street where, for the first time, we can house all of our programs under one roof, including our daily meal program with our state-of-the-art kitchen and distribution center, our Grocery Center where clients can come in and pick up weekly groceries, and our nutrition program, staffed by registered nutritionists.

We also share our building with two other agencies, Shanti and Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center, making 730 Polk a vital center for HIV/AIDS services in the heart of San Francisco.

To volunteer in San Francisco, please attend an orientation at 730 Polk Street held every Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm. For more details, visit the Volunteer section of our Web site.
