Home > Volunteer > Volunteer in Oakland > Group Volunteer Opportunities in the East Bay

Project Open Hand has served Alameda County since 1989. Today, we are increasing outreach and building new partnerships in the East Bay so that we can more effectively reach this diverse, dynamic community.

Our Grocery Center is the heart of our East Bay operations. Located in downtown Oakland, it’s where clients pick up meals and groceries, Monday – Friday.

Groups are scheduled on a first come first serve basis. Lunch is provided for all volunteers, to be eaten before or after their shifts.

Grocery Center Shift

We are able to accommodate small groups (2-8 people) during our hours of operation, Monday through Friday, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Volunteers greet and check-in clients, assemble client grocery and/or frozen meal orders, sort and stock grocery items and support the Grocery Center, as needed.

Warehouse Shift

We are able to accommodate groups of up to 10 people, Monday through Friday, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

Volunteers package dried goods into individual serving sizes for distribution to our clients at the Grocery Center.
