‘Meals with Love’ for Seniors: Kay’s Story
Categories:
A story series by Mary Jessup

A San Francisco native, Kay was raised in San Carlos, and lived in Texas, Hawaii, and Florida. In 2003, she returned to the City. She’s been coming to the Downtown Senior Center for almost four years.

She says, “I come to the Project Open Hand lunches almost every day for the nutrition. I like the chicken and fish dishes, and the variety of vegetables.”

Kay also likes the services provided by the Senior Center staff. She enjoys the video shows – ballet, concerts, opera, and movies. Grinning, she says, “The recent James Bond movies were great!”

Kay (on the right in the photo) loves life. And she loves to read. “I read books on art, fashion, decorating, social history, and places. I read fiction, too. And right now I’m redecorating my apartment,” she says, shimmering.

Kay retired from a twenty-year career in the legal field – as a legal secretary for fifteen years – and for the remaining five years as the front desk administrator, receptionist, and PR person at the San Francisco branch of one of the top 100 law firms in the world.

The Downtown Senior Center is located in the Tenderloin neighborhood, on O’Farrell Street near the corner of Jones. Kay encourages seniors to come and explore the center. Enthusiastically, she says, “Once you get through the front door, the Downtown Senior Center is a marvelous place to be.”

Do you know a senior who could use a warm, nutritious meal and good company? We’d love to see him or her at one of our senior lunch sites. Learn more and find a senior dining room at www.openhand.org/seniors.
