Did you know 19,000 seniors right here in San Francisco live with the threat of hunger every day? Thanks to your generous support, Project Open Hand is responding by expanding our Senior Lunch Program this spring.
“Project Open Hand is committed to providing high-quality nutrition to seniors and adults with disabilities in our community,” said Noah Lopez, Project Open Hand’s Director of Senior Programs. “We know that there many, many more seniors who can benefit from our healthy meals, as well as the good company and activities offered at our lunch sites. By expanding service at our existing sites, as well as increasing our geographic reach, we are able to nourish even more seniors in need.”
Starting May 1, we will add a third lunch seating at Curry Senior Center, our busiest lunch site, located in the Tenderloin neighborhood. At Curry, we already serve lunch at two seatings, seven days a week, as well as healthy breakfast daily. With the additional lunch seating, we can serve another 90 seniors every day – a total of 630 additional meals every week. That means healthy meals for even more hungry seniors in one of SF’s most impoverished neighborhoods. Starting May 1, lunch will be served at 10:30 am, 11:30 am and 12:30 pm.
In addition, we are opening to the public a new Senior Lunch Program site at the Stanford Hotel in downtown San Francisco, thanks to our expanding partnership with Swords to Plowshares. Since January, we have been providing meals to residents at the hotel, which is home to more than 100 previously-homeless veterans. By opening this site to the public, we will be able to offer warm, nutritious lunch to an additional 60 seniors and adults with disabilities every day – another 420 meals every week. This is our first site to be located in the financial district.
Lopez also noted that in March of this year, Project Open Hand’s Senior Lunch Program served the most meals in a single month in the program’s history: 25,640 meals in 31 days!
