Everyone loves a hearty, nutritious meal and the warm feelings that the smells and fresh ingredients evoke. For Terry, the healthy meals he picks up each day at Project Open Hand are a restorative part of his daily routine that not only fuel his body, but nourish his spirit as well.

“The simple pleasure of walking a few blocks each afternoon to pick up my meal s at Project Open Hand keeps my spirits up,” Terry said. “I plan my walk so that I pass by the local school just as the students are getting out. It energizes me to see them so vibrant and full of life.”

Terry meets regularly with Project Open Hand dietitian Kim Madsen, who advises him about how good nutrition can help him better cope with his symptoms and mitigate the side effects of treatment.

“Over the years, I’ve developed a nice dialogue with Kim about nutrition and my health,” Terry said. “I always feel better when I’m eating right, and Kim’s guidance has really helped.”

He added that he is impressed by the high quality and variety of the meals he receives. Terry’s favorite dish is spaghetti and meatballs. (Click here for Chef Richard’s meatball recipe.)

“I’ve had many health challenges over the years, and Project Open Hand has always been there for me,” said Terry, who has a client off and on since the 1990s.

At times, I’ve received groceries, and now I get mechanically-softened meals because of problems with my teeth. Whether my health is up or down, Project Open Hand takes care of me. I can’t imagine surviving without you. For me, including Project Open Hand in my will feels like the right thing to do.
