Project Open Hand has served Alameda County since 1989. Today, we are increasing outreach and building new partnerships in the East Bay so that we can more effectively reach this diverse, dynamic community.

Our Grocery Center is the heart of our East Bay operations. Located in downtown Oakland, it’s where clients pick up meals or groceries, Monday – Friday.

Volunteers come for one of the following shifts on their assigned day:

  • 9:30 am – 12:00 pm
  • 12:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Lunch is provided for all volunteers, to be eaten before or after their shifts.

Volunteer Duties:

  • Help open/close the Grocery Center
  • Greet clients
  • Use our computer to check in clients
  • Assemble and pack groceries and/or frozen meals for clients
  • Sort and/or repackage produce and other grocery items
  • Stock fridges, freezer, produce, and dry foods
  • Enter menu data into database

If you are interested in volunteering in the East Bay Grocery Center, please request an orientation by calling 510-622-0221. We will contact you to schedule a time to introduce you to the grocery center and discuss availability.
