Volunteers in San Francisco at the Grocery Center

Every day, more than 200 people visit our Grocery Center at 730 Polk Street to pick up nutritious meals or healthy groceries. Volunteers help greet clients, shop on clients’ behalf and help package food in our warehouse.

Weekly volunteer opportunities:

Grocery Center - Shopping

Description:

Volunteers assist with assembling pre-packed bags, shopping for clients’ chosen items, and distributing meals.

Qualifications:

Volunteer must 

  • Be at least fifteen (15) years of age. 
  • Practice safe steps in food handling, wear protective gear during entire shift and thoroughly wash and sanitize hands. 
  • Follow all instructions and directions given by staff, whose main goals are the quality of the meals and safety of clients, volunteers and staff alike. 
  • Be able to lift up to 25 lbs. and capable of standing during the volunteer shift.  
  • Be able to work well with others and comfortable interacting with a culturally diverse population. 
  • Maintain client confidentiality. 
  •  

Shift Times:

8:45 am to 12:30 pm Tuesday; 10:45 am to 1:00 pm Wednesday through Friday; 12:30 pm to 4:15 pm Tuesday through Friday.

Dress Code:

Short sleeve shirt, closed-toe shoes, and long pants.

Grocery Center - Warehouse

Description:

Volunteer assists with sorting bulk items into individual portions, sorting fresh produce, and stocking perishable items in the refrigerator and/or freezer.

Qualifications:

Volunteer must 

  • Be at least fifteen (15) years of age. 

  • Practice safe steps in food handling, wear protective gear during entire shift and thoroughly wash and sanitize hands. 

  • Follow all instructions and directions given by staff, whose main goals are the quality of the meals and safety of clients, volunteers and staff alike. 

  • Be able to lift up to 25 lbs. and capable of standing during the volunteer shift.  

  • Be able to work well with others and comfortable interacting with a culturally diverse population.

 

Shift Times:

9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm Monday through Saturday. 

Dress Code:

Short sleeve shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes. You will be required to wear a hairnet or you can bring your own hat.

Grocery Center Data Entry

Description:

The Data Entry volunteer inputs data into our database from paper documents, helping maintain accurate inventory. The ideal candidate is computer literate and detail-oriented. Project Open Hand will rely on you for accurately updated data that is easily accessible via the database.  

Qualifications:

Volunteer must 

  • Be at least fifteen (15) years of age. 

  • Follow all instructions and directions given by staff, whose main goals are the quality of the meals and safety of clients, volunteers and staff alike. 

  • Be able to work well with others and comfortable interacting with a culturally diverse population. 

 

Shift Times:

This is a limited shift. Tuesday - Friday afternoon (1pm- 4:15pm)

Dress Code:

Short sleeve shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes.

Oakland Grocery Center – Shopping

Description:

Our Oakland Grocery Center is the heart of our East Bay operations. Located in downtown Oakland, it’s where clients pick up meals or groceries. Volunteers help provide a welcoming environment for clients. Volunteer tasks include:

  • Checking in clients in our database  

  • Ensuring client menus are filled out properly 

  • Assembling and packing groceries and medically-tailored meals 

  • Sorting, repackaging and stocking produce and other grocery items 

  • Maintaining a safe and sanitary shopping atmosphere 

 

Qualifications:

Volunteer must 

  • Be at least fifteen (15) years of age.
